Atopic eczema (also called atopic dermatitis) is a group of diseases that can cause inflammation of the skin resulting in intense itching, reddening, dryness, blistering and scaling.

Eczema often starts in childhood and is caused by the immune system reacting to things such as foods and airborne allergens like the house dust mite. True allergic reactions can be confirmed by reviewing the with the results of skin prick tests or blood tests, and, if necessary, oral food challenge tests.  This would be performed at an allergy clinic.

Since not all cases are linked to allergy, the preferred term is "the Atopic Eczema/Dermatitis Syndrome" Eczema can also be cause by sensitivities to irritants such as detergents and biological soap powders, this is a particular problem for those that work in occupations where there is constant contact with chemicals such as hairdressers and motor mechanics.

However if you suffer from eczema, and all the above have been ruled out it is certainly worth looking at your diet and considering a supervised elimination diet.
